Sarber's Cameras began in 1961 when Peter and Nancy Sarber took ownership of the oldest camera store in the area, Oakland Camera Exchange. Peter and Nancy built their store on the basics of good customer service and community involvement. Back then; 8mm movie cameras, projectors, and home darkroom supplies were the order of the day. The original store on 14th Street was moved to Montclair Village in 1964 and the name was changed to Sarber's Cameras. As photography grew, so did Sarber's, adding a frame shop in Oakland and opening another store in Davis, CA in the mid-1970s, when high quality SLR cameras like the Canon AE-1 exploded in popularity. As Sarber's helped more and more people discover photography, more prints were being made, so an in-store lab was added in 1987. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Sarber's Cameras reputation grew as a place where Pros and Amateurs could go for equipment, supplies, quality prints, advice and answers to all their photography questions.
